Waikato challenges Canterbury unsuccessfully for the Ranfurly Shield - the first time any Waikato team plays in the South Island.
Waikato supply 14 of 15 players for a combined side that plays Great Britain at Rugby Park. Great Britain wins 40-16 before a crowd of 13,000. It is the first radio broadcast of a match in Hamilton.

Taupiri, Waipa and Hamilton sub-unions combine for a club competition and compete for the Stag Trophy. The inaugural winner is Hamilton Old Boys.

South Africa visit Hamilton and play a combined side featuring five Waikato players. A record crowd of 17,553 witness the 6-3 win to South Africa at Rugby Park.

The Harlequins club is formed to help develop young rugby players in the Waikato.

Outbreak of World War II and many Waikato players sign up. Several Waikato players had been in line for the New Zealand tour to South Africa.
