Last week our Match Officials Game Developer hosted our first Referee Recruitment meeting for the 2023 - a great success with two new members joining our referee ranks for the upcoming season. With the intention to deliver more in partnership with our clubs and their communities. 

Our region has a proud history with our referee’s association who also celebrate 100 years of refereeing rugby in the Waikato in 2023. This year we need referees more than ever with the continual increase of participants we are seeing in the community game - from junior rugby right through to our senior competitions. 

In 2022 we had a total of 107 registered referees - the 4th largest registered referees base across New Zealand, and we still require more to ensure every game has a registered referee. We remain to have referees officiate in several matches on a Saturday.

Refereeing our national game is a great way to stay in our beloved game. You are right amongst the action, taking on a new challenge while ensuring our up-and-coming talent continue to love their favourite game and kept safe out on the field.
