Club Rugby Finals - 28 July


The Waikato Club Finals day (excluding the Under 85kgs competition) will be held in and around FMG Stadium Waikato with the first game (Championship B Final) kicking off at 12 noon and the Premiership A Final scheduled for 5.30pm. Below is the programme for the day and a preview for some of the finals.

Premiership A Final

Hamilton Old Boys v Hautapu - FMG Stadium Waikato, 5.30pm

The top two sides in the Premiership at the end of Round 2 will face off again for the third time this season in the final for the Waikato Breweries Shield. Hamilton Old Boys will be looking for back to back title, the first team to achieve this feat since Hamilton Marist three-peat back in 2015, while Hautapu will be trying to achieve their first title since 2007. Hamilton Old Boys have won both matches this season, the first was at the end of Round 1 beating Hautapu at Fred Jones Park 27-13 they also backed up and won the Round 2 clash at the end of the second round to claim the Has Catley Trophy with a 30-19 win at the same venue.

Premiership B Final

Hamilton Marist v Otorohanga - Mill Street, 3.30pm

Championship A Final

Taupiri v Te Awamutu Sports - FMG Stadium Waikato, 2.00pm

Just like the Premiership A Final the Championship Final also features the top two sides from the division.  Te Awamutu went through the second round undefeated and claimed the NZFP Trophy and then hosted the semi final at Albert Park against Hinuera were they comfortably won to move into the Final. Taupiri suffered two defeats in Round 2 the first was at Albert Park against Te Awamutu Sports where they fought back from 18 points down to lose the game by 1 point in a 33-32 thriller, the other loss was to Southern United in the final round robin match. Last week they had the week off and moved straight into the final after Southern United default.

Championship B Final

Leamington v United Matamata Sports - Fred Jones Park, 12.00pm

Division 2 Final 

Hamilton Old Boys v Raglan - Mill Street, 1.45pm

The Division 2 Alpha Hotel Cup final also features the top two sides at the end of Round 2. Hamilton Old Boys will be looking to win their fifth consecutive title while Raglan have had a strong return to club rugby after a three year hiatus by making the final in their first year back in the competition. Hamilton Old Boys and Raglan have faced off twice this season with Hamilton Old Boys winning both encounters. The first was a comfortable win for Hamilton Old Boys in Raglan with a 36-7 win in week 2 and they had a narrow one point 27-26 win in the return match at Willoughby Park in week 11.

Colts Final 

Morrinsville Sports v United Matamata Sports - Fred Jones Park, 2.00pm

The Colts competition top two teams Morrinsville Sports (58 points) and United Matamata Sports (56 points) go straight into the final for the Elliot Shield. Both teams have played each other three times this season with United Matamata Sports leading the way with two wins out of the three matches.

Gallagher Women's Premiership Final

Hamilton Old Boys v Melville - FMG Stadium Waikato, 3.45pm

Top of the table Melville will take on 2nd place Hamilton Old Boys will be trying to win back to back Gallagher Cups. Melville went straight into the final last week after a default from Southern United, while Hamilton Old Boys beat University by 9 points at Fred Jones Park to book their place in the semi final. Both team have played each other twice during the regular season with each side picking up a win. The first Melville beat Hamilton Old Boys at Willoughby Park 25-5 in week 5 but in the return match Hamilton Old Boys got the better of Melville handing them their only defeat of the year beating them at Collins Road 32-0.

The Under 85kgs competition moves into their Semi Finals round with competition joint leaders Melville and Morrinsville Sports (both 2017 finalists) both hosting Semi Finals.
